Iconic Events at Radnor Hunt

Radnor Hunt hosts a number of iconic events which have been held on our grounds for decades. These events are open to the public with the purchase of a ticket from the event site.  All of the events benefit a specific charity or foundation.

The Radnor Hunt Races is a springtime steeplechase racing highlight. It is a spectacular event featuring thoroughbred horses racing over fences, pony racing, sidesaddle racing and a carriage parade, all taking place on Radnor Hunt’s spectacular 100 acres. Often attracting close to 10,000 spectators, the organizer and benefactor of the Radnor Races is The Brandywine Conservancy.

The 100 Motorcars of Radnor Hunt is a nationally recognized motor car event, first organized in 1997 by Michael G. Tillson, III, a Governor and Master of the Hounds of the Radnor Hunt and a recognized expert on the subject of classic, sports, and racing cars.

Michael Tillson and several of the present committee members of the Concours played major roles in the organization and supervision of the Fairmount Park Vintage Grand Prix events that were held from 1990 to 1995. Featuring several hundred vintage sports racing cars, these four-day racing weekends honored the memory of the famous Fairmount Park races that took place in Philadelphia’s vast Fairmount Park system during the period of the First World War. At the time, the Fairmount Park races were the premier racing events in the United States, comparable in scope and reputation to the later Vanderbilt Cup races and the Indianapolis races of the 1920s and 1930s.

It was Michael Tillson’s concept to stage an elegant invitational classic car event on the spacious, historic grounds of the Radnor Hunt in Chester County that would compare to the elegance and quality of such national events as the annual Pebble Beach Concours.

The Concours far removed from the typical “car show.” An invitational, the cars are carefully and individually selected to represent an educational and aesthetic experience for guests. There is a balance between historic, classic, sports and performance racing cars.

The Concours has its own unique ambience, combining the most relaxed qualities of an English garden party with a celebration of the cars that have written memorable chapters in the history of the motor car.

  3. American Foxhounds
  4. Crossbred Foxhounds
  5. Penn
  6. Marydel Foxhounds, Beagles and Bassets.
The competition features traditional confirmation classes for adult and junior handlers as as well as pack classes which are conducted on the Radnor Hunt racetrack overlooking the beautiful grounds. A whip cracking and horn blowing competition complete the fun.

An equestrian triathlon comprising dressage, show jumping and cross country jumping, the Radnor Hunt Horse Trials takes place each year in mid-October and has roots dating back to 1972 which was the first year of the Radnor Hunt International Three-Day Event.

“The Radnor Hunt Three-Day Event was the premier event in the country and nearly every American Olympic event rider cut their teeth at Radnor,” said Richard Walkup, Chair of the Radnor Hunt Horse Trials.”

In 2007, after it became impractical to host international divisions at Radnor Hunt, a group spearheaded by the iconic Marilyn Taylor, got together to create the Radnor Hunt Horse Trials of today. It is the same sport as the old Three-Day with lesser degrees of difficulty and smaller jumps, and is recognized by The U.S. Eventing Association.
